Harry over saw many changes in the ambulance service during his 36
years in the business, then retiring at age 65. In 1968, the ambulance
service came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry Of Health. All
ambulances in the province were owned by the ministry with each ambulance
service in Ontario receiving a varying flat rate for the provision
of services in their area. To meet the growing needs of the community,
a heated two car ambulance garage, with a wash bay and crew quarters
was built in 1981. The service expanded to eventually employing 3
full time attendants and over 15 part time and casual employees, including
family members, Donna Hoffman, Jim's wife, grandchildren Jeff Hoffman
and Honey Willemsen. The service averaged over 1200 calls a year,
with the highest call out during the summer months. The Hoffman Ambulance
Service, had a well respected, reliable reputation within the community,
right up until its take over by Huron County in January 2000.
